Interface design: A semiotic paradigm*

چکیده

Design principles are semiotic by nature. To design means to structure systems of signs in such a way as to make possible the achievement of human goals: communication (as a form of social interaction), engineering (as a form of applied technical rationality), business (as a form of shared efficiency), architecture, art, education, etcetera. Design comes about in an environment traditionally called culture, currently identified as artificial (through a rather romantic distinction between natural and artificial), and acts as a bridge between scientific and humanistic praxes. A long this line of thinking, Simon (1982) stated, ‘Engineering, medicine, business, architecture, and painting are concerned not with the necessary but with the contingent not with how things are but how things might be in short, with design’. The object of semiotics is sign systems and their functioning within culture. For a long time (and for reasons whose presentation is beyond the scope of this article), one type of sign the symbol has been considered representative of all signs in human culture: ‘for most of us . . . the significant part of the environment consists mostly of strings of artifacts called “symbols” that we receive through eyes and ears in the form of written and spoken language and that we pour out into the environment as I am now doing by mouth or hand’ (Simon 1982). Actually, we perceive signs through all our senses, and we generate signs that address the same. The fact that some of these signs (visual, auditory) are more important should not prevent us from considering any other sign that can be used for representation, communication, and communication functions. But before dealing with these basic functions, we have to settle upon one of the many definitions of sign that have been advanced in the field of semiotics, and then apply it as consistently as possible. The definitions fall into two basic categories: 1. Adoption of one kind of sign usually pertaining to verbal language as a paradigm, with the understanding that every other sign is structurally equivalent. Artificial intelligence researchers are quite comfortable with this model. The Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure advanced

Hypertext Semiotics in the Commercialized Internet

Hypertext theory makes use of the same set of terms that have been explored in decades of semiotic investigation, such as sign, text, communication, code, metaphor, paradigm, syntax, etc. Building on approaches that have succeeded in applying semiotic principles and methodology to computer science, such as computer semiotics, computational semiotics, and semiotic interface engineering, this dis...

Algebraic Semiotics, Proofwebs, and Distributed Cooperative Proving 1

We describe a new approach to interface design called algebraic semiotics, combining semiotics with algebraic speciication to give a rigorous theory of representation quality, and we apply it to the tatami distributed cooperative proving project. This project uses standard html, Java, etc. for remote proof browsing, servers for remote proof execution, a protocol to maintain truth of distributed...

Hidden Biases in Semiotic Engineering Introducing Communicability Evaluation to Multi-Touch Interface Design

This paper describes the use of Semiotic Engineering methods in the context of multi-touch interaction. Focusing on the analysis of user testing data, we describe the transferability of Semiotic Engineering methods (specifically the Communicability Evaluation Method) across two interaction paradigms. While Communicability Evaluation is traditionally used for the analysis of graphical user inter...

Design issues in a semiotic description of user responses to three interfaces

Semiotics has been used as a theoretical basis for systematising the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of human-computer interaction. This paper focuses on the descriptive qualities of semiotics which are useful for understanding the user perspective of computer systems. The end goal is to assess the application of such semiotic description in interface design. An experiment is presented in...

Semiotic Engineering – A New Paradigm for Designing Interactive Systems

This paper presents semiotic engineering – a semiotic theory of HCI. The theory has the advantage to integrate back end and front end design and development perspectives into a single metacommunication process that affects the user’s experience and, ultimately, the success of any system. By means of illustrative examples, we show the kinds of effects that can be achieved with the theory, and di...

The Semiotics of User Interface Redesign

User interface design is still more of an art than a science. Interface design and redesign is mostly based on empirical studies or prototypes but there is still surprisingly little theoretical or engineering understanding of how to go about the design process and produce good designs the first time around. We present a semiotic analysis that explains features of some user interface redesigns t...
